The Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Washington is searching for a Judge. Located near Washington, D.C., in Hyattsville, Maryland, the Tribunal seeks a Judge for cases concerning the nullity or dissolution of marriage and other canonical matters. The primary responsibility of this role is to serve the Archdiocese of Washington's communities.
The scope of responsibilities includes meeting with parties and interviewing in all first-instance cases assigned relating to the nullity or dissolution of marriage. The Judge will review testimony, conduct depositions, participate in informational meetings on annulments, and write formal judicial sentences. The Judge will participate in court officers’ meetings, offer canonical counsel, review all assigned cases in the Court of Appeals, and compose judicial briefs as necessary.
The Judge will report to the Judicial Vicar and the Secretary for Canonical Services.
The qualified candidate may be a Lay Person, Priest or Religious who holds a Licentiate (JCL) or Doctorate (JCD) in Canon Law with a minimum of three years of Tribunal experience, particularly in substantive and procedural penal law. The ability to work with clients from multicultural backgrounds is required, as are well-developed interpersonal skills. Bilingual Spanish language skills are a plus.
